Welcome to April. For us that means we have 6 more weeks of school before Summer break – Crazy! My daughter finally gets Spring break next week, too. I am really looking forward to having some fun with her. We plan on going to LegoLand and playing miniature golf. Hopefully we can get in a couple of play dates and she can have a sleep over at her grandparents. Maybe my husband and I can actually have a date night that doesn’t end in a trip to the ER with my husband having chest pain. I can hope.
With all the Spring vegetables and fruit available, I have been dying to take a trip down to the Decatur Farmer’s Market. It is a little under an hour away so I don’t go very often. I want to go so bad. I am like a kid at a candy store there. I can find produce from all around the world and a lot more organic options. Then, of course, there is the seafood. Why is it so hard to find good, fresh fish in this country? Everywhere we have lived it has been hard to find. I want wild never frozen fish. I am mindful of sustainability and don’t buy over-fished seafood but I do want it wild. I also want to stock up on my turkey or chicken sausage. They have an amazing variety of turkey and chicken sausages including turkey bratwurst, chorizo, etc. Maybe we need to eat a little more food in our freezer first. It is still pretty stocked but the thought of all this great food makes me giddy with anticipation.
Maybe after LegoLand I can throw in a quick stop. My daughter doesn’t mind too much. She loves to bag the produce and is very proud that she has learned to tie a knot on the top of the plastic produce bags. She also loves the bread samples. Oh! I haven’t even mentioned the incredible bread. I love to make my own bread but theirs is so good it tastes like homemade. It was their pita bread with cheddar, green onions and ajwain that was the inspiration for my own pita bread. They also have a fantastic jewish rye. It has the right amount of caraway flavor. Their light wheat sandwich bread even makes a PBJ seem special and I always like to keep a loaf of their brioche in the freezer in case I want to make bread pudding.
Are there grocery stores or food that just make you giddy? I would love to hear about them.
Happy Healthy Spring Eating!
