What is the first fruit you think of when it is summer? I bet it is watermelon. What fruit is more quintessentially associated with summer than watermelon? Do you remember eating watermelon as a kid? Seeing how far you could spit the seeds out? Wondering if a watermelon would grow in your tummy if you swallowed one? Eating watermelon feels like a right of passage here in the USA for kids. It makes me feel like a kid whenever I take a bite of this juicy, delicious fruit. I have to admit now a days, I think of pureeing the watermelon for cocktails and mocktails. I know summer is beginning when I have my blender full of luscious watermelon making the base for my margaritas or these virgin ones.
My little one loves to get in on the action of having a “special”. That is what we call a non-alcoholic drink. When she sees me in the kitchen making a cocktail, she always asks for a special. So now I just make the beverage non-alcoholic and can add alcohol to individual glasses for those who want it. It means everyone can enjoy a “special”. Serving a non-alcoholic watermelon margarita in half of a watermelon is a spectacular presentation for a party. Doesn’t it look so pretty with the snazzy umbrellas and cute cocktail picks? It is a great way to serve this scrumptious drink for a crowd.
To make this watermelon beverage taste like a margarita without alcohol, I used agave as the sweetener. Did you know Tequila was made from agave? It is a nifty ingredient for fooling your taste buds. You can even add a little sparkling water to add some fizz, too. I like to rim my glasses with a little mixture of salt and sugar, or serve it with a cute cocktail pick filled with watermelon and grapes. There are so many options. Kids and grown-ups alike are going to love this.
Get in on the action, Georgia’s Best Summertime Drink contest is on and it is fun! Here is what you need to do. Whip out your blender or your juicer and get cracking on a summertime drink featuring locally grown Georgia watermelons. You can zip up a child friendly beverage or an adults only cocktail. How it works:
- Create your perfect summertime beverage featuring Georgia watermelon.
- Submit your recipe through August 15, 2016 by completing the entry form at bottom of page or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
- Qualified recipes will be shared on their social media pages for all to see.
- Winners will be announced in late August.

Watermelon Margarita Mocktail
- 1 medium seedless Georgia Watermelon , cut into chunks
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
- 4 tsp . agave
- 1/3 cup sparking water
In a blender, puree enough watermelon chunks so that you have 4 cups of watermelon puree.
Add lime juice and agave and mix again.
Pour into 4 cups.
Top with sparkling water.
