It is Recipe Redux time. What is Recipe Redux? It is a fun, healthy recipe challenge that was started by registered dietitians and is now open to any healthy food blogger. Each month, we are given a theme and challenged to make a healthy, delicious recipe celebrating that theme. This month the theme is, drum roll please, spirits as in alcohol. Oh la la, I like that theme. I’m not a big drinker; two is my limit, but I do enjoy a good cocktail and love to cook with wine. I actually already had a few recipes that use wine that I could have used but that didn’t seem to fit into the spirit of the challenge. I wanted to do something with spirits that I hadn’t done before.

Since I was also planning on making a chocolate sorbet, I decided to combine the two. Alcohol doesn’t freeze, so adding it to a frozen dessert like a sorbet, makes it less icy. Oh yes baby, better texture and with the right spirit, amped up flavor. Plus it ticks another box off my daughter’s and mine summer to-do list. I’m a multi-tasking genius! I used up half of a watermelon that was on its last legs, I made something for Recipe Redux, I completed another task off the summer to do list and I thoroughly enjoyed eating it. Oh, I wish everyday could be that easy.

In this chocolate sorbet recipe, I used St. Germaine, a french liquor made of elder flowers. Now this is a pricey bottle of alcohol. I have it on hand because I love to make cocktails with it and a little, I mean a little, goes a long way. This bottle is going to last me for years to come. It has a fruity floral flavor, which I thought would match nicely with the watermelon. If you don’t want to buy a bottle, you can substitute Cassis, Grand Marnier, or any currant flavored liqueur. Don’t’ have those? Triple Sec would work but would give more of an orange flavor. A fruit flavored vodka would be a good substitute, too.

I’m sure the question about whether this Watermelon Chocolate Sorbet is child friendly will pop up. Yes it has alcohol in it, about 5 teaspoons. Since there are 8 servings, that means each serving has a little over half of teaspoon of alcohol. So yes, I would let my little one have a scoop. That is about the same alcohol she would get in something I used vanilla extract in. You decide what is best for your family. They are your children and you are the best person to make those type of decisions for them. You can also omit the alcohol. It does add a little taste and definitely adds to the texture but the Watermelon Dark Chocolate Sorbet will still be delish.

Hi Serena, It will still be pretty hard with the amount I put in but not quite as bad. You can always add a little more :)
  13. This looks amazing. I have all these ingredients in my pantry even the Elderflower. The trouble would be keeping it away from the kids. Wow. Yum.
