Cocktail Time is back! I certainly hope you enjoy this little bit of whimsy as much as I do. Although a cocktail recipe may seem in juxtaposition to healthy recipes, a spiced whiskey sour fits quite nicely into our lifestyle. In fact most Friday nights, I am shaking up a cocktail of some type. I especially like to use homemade mixers so I can control the sugar. Furthermore, I love using fresh fruit juices. With those two tenets in mind, cocktails seem to fight into my realm of healthy recipes.

Like everything else in life, moderation is the key. As such I limit my cocktail making to the weekend and usually just one cocktail a night. Let me tell you, this Spiced Whiskey Sour has totally captivated me, particularly because of the Chinese Five Spice. I find that Chinese Five Spice is often the spice I run to when I am looking for a little something something. You know that intangible flavor that is a little mysterious and familiar all at the same time. Likewise, you can find many of my recipes us it. So why not a whiskey sour.
Whiskey Sour Recipe

The key to this whiskey sour is making your own spiced simple syrup. First making simple syrup is easy, oh so easy. Second, you control the sugar. Usually simply syrup is made from a solution of 50% water and 50% sugar. I often will make mine with 60% water and 40% sugar. Additionally you can use a sugar substitute or even honey or agave. The honey or agave will change the flavor of your cocktail, but that could be a huge plus in some recipes. For this whiskey sour recipe, I would absolutely be open to honey or agave.

So shake up your own whiskey sour and lets say “Cheers” together. Just remember to drink responsibly.

Spiced Whiskey Sour

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. Chinese Five Spice Powder
  • 1 1/2 oz. Whiskey
  • 1 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. In a microwave safe container, stir together water, sugar and Chinese Five Spice.

  2. Microwave for 2 minutes, or until sugar has fully dissolved.

  3. Cool completely.

  4. Pour ice into a cocktail shaker.

  5. Add whiskey, lemon juice and 1 to 1 1/2 oz simple syrup.

  6. Shake about 20 times and pour into a glass.
