Healthy Breakfast - Orange Banana Protein Smoothie Low Calorie, Low Fat

Creamy smoothie with undertones of orange, mango and banana

I have never been a big smoothie drinker. If I’m going to drink a meal, then the drink better be really good. I mean really good!! Since I have a love hate relationship with breakfast, a smoothie has surprisingly become my go to on mornings I really don’t want to eat. I found the way to be happy and satisfied with a smoothie is to put in a little of something I love but rarely have. In addition  a little of something I don’t usually like. It is amazing that the contradiction of ingredients is exactly what I needed to be satisfied with a smoothie.

Simply Orange Orange Juice with Mango is the something I love. It is great on its own or in an adult beverage. It also makes me incredibly happy to drink a smoothie. I rarely choose to drink juice on its own because of the calories. You know I would much rather eat my calories than drink them. I found putting in just a half of a cup is enough to spice up my smoothie.

My other issue with a smoothie was texture. I don’t like ice or frozen fruit in it but I also don’t like it runny. However, I want it to feel luxurious. The solution was a food I don’t care much for in its original form, cottage cheese. I have a little aversion to cottage cheese. It is definitely not a food I crave or would even choose to eat on its own. I remembered that I liked it in a cheese filing of lasagna when it is processed until smooth. I also liked the idea of adding additional protein so I threw it in. Voila – the texture of the smoothie was so rich and luxurious, exactly what I was looking for.

  1. Can I use regular flavored orange juice.
  2. Can I use greek yogurt instead of cottage cheese (I never have this). Does it increase the total calories by a lot?

Hi Julie, Using 2% Greek yogurt has 4 calories less than cottage cheese and 1 gram of protein less. It would be a great substitute. The texture may not quite be as thick though.
  3. That looks so good. I don't like to add a lot of ice either, so I usually freeze the bananas and it makes it thick and creamy!
  4. That looks and sounds great. I'm always looking for a treat/meal with 20 g. protein in it. This is perfect!

  9. Hi Christie, I've been on a bit of a smoothie kick here recently. The weather is already warming up here in Phoenix so they are the perfect way to begin the day. This one looks interesting. I usually use plain nonfat Greek yogurt in my smoothies. Had never considered cottage cheese, but I've got some in my fridge I need to use up and will give it a try. Thanks so much. Martha

Hi Martha, I like the texture cottage cheese gives the smoothies. I find it is a little thicker then Greek yogurt. Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Barbara, Glad you like the smoothie recipe. I really love what cottage cheese does to the texture of the smoothie plus the added protein.
