Once summer hits, I love to have smoothies for breakfast.  They are cool and refreshing plus I get an extra bonus from getting fruit into my diet first thing in the morning.  Mango Guanabana smoothie has quickly become my favorite.  I don’t like overly sweet foods at breakfast.  This smoothie strikes the perfect balance of sweetness and silky texture.

Are you wondering what the heck a guanabana is?  I hadn’t the faintest clue the first time I saw it.  My favorite Greek yogurt, Fage, has a mango guanabana flavor.  It is by far my favorite flavored yogurt ever.  I don’t like a lot of flavored yogurt because they are too sweet.  This is perfect.  I could eat it morning, noon and night.  I had to do a search to see what guanabana was.  It is also known as soursop and is a large spiny tropical fruit that is slightly tart and is related to a custard apple.  I’ve never actually seen the fruit itself but I found some frozen pureed guanabana in the freezer section of my local grocery store.

My big issue with smoothies is the texture.  I don’t like to add ice.  I want it creamy and thick.  To get the texture I like, I use cottage cheese.  Funnily enough, I don’t like cottage cheese on its own.  I cannot stand to eat it unless it is hidden in something.  You can’t taste it in the smoothie.  It makes my smoothie feel like a nice, rich milkshake.  I get a double bonus from an additional boost of protein.

My little one loves smoothies in the summer too.  It just makes me feel like we are getting the day off on the right foot.  Some day I am going to get the courage to try a smoothie with kale or spinach.  I’m not sure how my blender would handle it though.  So if I win the lottery, I am going to buy a Blendtec or a Vitamix.  Then I can whip up any type of smoothie I want.  In the meantime, I’ll stick to my little blender and my fruit and cottage cheese smoothies.

Hi! I used to eat guanabana while living in Panama and Bali - I've never seen the frozen pulp or the fresh fruit in the U.S. but I'll look for it now!!! I'd love, love, love to have a set of glasses like you show in your blog - can you tell me where you got them or any info to help me find them? Thanks! -Roberta

Hi Roberta, I bought this glass from Red Robin :) They served a strawberry lemonade in it and I fell in love with it. Hope you have a Red Robin near you! It is a fun glass and the smoothie is delicious.
    • Hi Roberta I was about to ask Christie where did she find her Guanabana. I grew up in Panama and I can eat the fruit by itself all day, lol Miss those days!
  3. Ha! I knew that glass looked familiar. I "bought" several from Red Robin when I was in high school, as well ;-) I think I've actually seen guanabana in my grocery store! I just kind of turned my head to the side at it, trying to figure out what it was. This sounds super tasty and I love the addition of cottage cheese!

Hi Kelly, :) I wish I could find the actual fruit but I am super happy to find the puree. I use to hate smoothies because of texture until I started adding cottage cheese. I don't like ice in a smoothie so the cottage cheese gives it nice thickness. Makes me feel like I am drinking a milk shake!

No Red Robins in South Dakota but I have another house in North Scottsdale and I DO know where the Red Robin is!!! Thanks SO VERY MUCH!!! -Roberta

Your welcome Roberta. I'm so happy you left a comment today. I love talking about food & dishes, too.
  5. Christie where do I find the Guanabana frozen pulp. I tried some Jumex nectar I saw at the store, but hated it! Knowing the taste of the real thing picked from my own back yard back in the day, I'm kind of picky! Love this smoothie! Thank You for sharing! Hugs, Lizy

  7. Banana in the pictures, no banana in the smoothie?
  8. If you have a Bravo market near you, they sell the soursop (guanabana) fruit when it’s in season.
