Small challenges to achieve a healthy lifestyle. This weeks challenge – drink more water
Congratulations! You have made to Week #3. If you happen to have just found the Healthy Challenge, join us. It isn’t too late. The Healthy Challenge is the idea of taking very small baby steps to achieve a healthy lifestyle. The idea is to take these very small steps so you actually change and not just diet in the moment. I am hoping this will once and for all help me conquer my weight and truly change my life. The challenges are supposed to be fairly easy and for people of various health levels.
The first week the challenge was to journal all your food. The idea is to get to know the food that you eat as well as what a serving size actually looks like. You need to know the calories in your food and how you feel when you eat them. Some people feel better with high protein, low carb. Others feel better on a more vegetarian type diet. See what works for you. Just journal everything you eat.
Week 2 was to add more exercise. You only need to add 20 minutes of exercise a week. I broke it up onto 10 minute periods. I go to the gym twice a week and do weights. So I added 10 minutes on the elliptical after each weight work out. If you have never worked out or haven’t in a while, the idea is to start slow. Even if that means you walk in place during the commercials of your favorite TV show. Every year when I start gungho into exercise, I injure myself. That totally defeats the purpose of getting healthy, so let’s start with small steps.
Now to week 3. You still need to keep up with what we were doing in week 1 and 2. So let’s add another component. How do you feel about water? Luckily I love it, but I have been a little slack lately about drinking 8 cups a day. So I am back to it. 8 cups really is perfect for me. 6 cups a day may work for you. My body tells me when I haven’t drunk enough. If you are a soda drinker, please, please, please stop! Soda is so bad for you. There is absolutely nothing healthy about drinking a cup of chemicals. If you don’t like water, try adding fruit or vegetables to it. I love to add cucumber, strawberries, and limes. Think past lemon.
Also think about the cup or bottle you use! One totally strange thing I have noticed about my water habits is that the cup matters. Maybe I am just strange, but I drink faster when I use a water bottle with a small opening, no straw. I came to this realization recently. I was super thirsty and grabbed a regular glass. I was trying to gulp down the water and I found I could only sip. What? I usually can gulp down a cup in a matter of seconds. The penny didn’t drop then. My husband came home with a new water bottle with a straw. It was given to him by a client who made the water bottle. They were really excited about the new way it was structured. Again, I could not gulp down the water. Drinking out of a straw is fine except when you are in the middle of a workout and trying to catch your breath. For some bizarre reason, I have a hard time drinking and breathing! That is when it hit me. I like a water bottle with a small opening. For whatever reason, I can guzzle down half the bottle in a matter of seconds.
Find what works for you! I have a small mouth so maybe that has something to do with it or I’m just strange! Find your water inspiration and step up to the challenge. Are you ready?
