Guest Post – Prevention RD Green Smoothie


I was a latecomer to the world of food bloggers. I really had no idea there was this huge universe of food love out there. Then when Pinterest came along my eyes were opened wide. One of the first blogs I started to follow was Prevention RD.  I started following Nicole on Facebook and just loved her recipes and no-nonsense approach to food.  She was stuck on the latest food fad and seemed to approach food so sensibly.  (OK just like my approach).  So when I needed someone to guest post for me, she was one of the first to come to my mind.  I knew you would be in great hands.  So I am very honored to present:

As a Registered Dietitian, people ask me all the time what foods they should be eating. I hate this question because there are so many healthy foods and no one single food in the diet will make a person’s diet healthy. There are however, foods that are packed with nutrition that I love to see a part of healthy diets – one of those foods being spinach!


When the “green monster” (“aka” a green smoothie with spinach) movement began, I didn’t jump on board whole-heartedly. The color of murky, brownish-green swamp water simply isn’t appealing to me. As people have toyed with the endless combinations, I’ve been able to watch the green monster become perfected.

I recently ran across this recipe that I tweaked just a bit. I fell in love – with the taste, the nutritional value, and perhaps most importantly, that stunning green color! I think you’ll love this, too!


Green Mango Smoothie adapted from Happy Hearted Kitchen

1 mango, cubed and frozen (~1 cup)
1 large handful (1.5 oz) raw baby spinach
1 1/3 cups unsweetened almond milk
1/2 Tbsp honey


Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth, scraping down the sides of the blender as needed. Serve immediately.

Yield: 1 serving

Nutrition Information (per smoothie): 211 calories; 4.0 g. fat; 0 mg. cholesterol; 209 mg. sodium; 45.0 g. carbohydrate; 4.0 g. fiber; 2.0 g. protein

  2. Yum!! I made a green smoothie this morning. I usually use spinach but I switched it up today and used kale instead. It was great!! I love green smoothies and all of the variations!

  4. I've never made a green smoothie before. I'm not even sure I've looked at a recipe-- like Nicole, I've always thought of swamp water. This actually sounds really delicious and not swampy tasting at all, excited to give it a try!
