My favorite sandwich, smoky baked ham, Swiss cheese, crunchy coleslaw and a smear of Thousand Island on Rye.
My sandwich at lunch today is making my brain spin. My brain is in super hyper drive thinking about the future. Yes all of that from a sandwich; which is highly coincidental as I needed to write-up a post for this sandwich today. I love to find irony or coincidence in everything, Serendipity. Why oh why, is a sandwich making my brain spin? Well, it actually has nothing to do with the sandwich itself. Don’t get me wrong, I love this sandwich. It is my sandwich of sandwiches but I didn’t have it today. My daughter and I actually went out for lunch to a” new to us” place. It has been there a while but we had never been. It is a bake and sandwich shop but the minute you walk in, you feel so welcome and at home. This is a woman’s type of place. (Please do not send me messages about referring to something as a woman’s or man’s place) There was only one man eating there and tons of women. The baked items did look fantastic and were really nicely displayed. The sandwich was really nothing special, but the atmosphere was someplace I would like to go back to again and again. It set my mind in motion about a little dream my husband and I have talked about, starting our own Gourmet Food Store. Now we aren’t going to run out and do it anytime soon but the vibe of this restaurant was perfect. It was the vibe that got my creative juices going.
I want our store to be someplace people feel calm, happy and at home in. I want to be able to talk about a piece of fresh, wild salmon with a customer and brainstorm together about all the possibilities. I would love to have an assortment of healthy ready to go salads and dinners too. I want everything to be healthy even the desserts. Ok the dessert might not be healthy but at least “light” in calories and fat. I would love to sell beer and wine too. Now if I only knew how to do all of that! I think I will be researching some food services classes at a local college. I would still keep the blog too. Yup, all that from a sandwich.
Now onto this sandwich, Baked Ham and Cheese on rye with Coleslaw and Thousand Island. This is my favorite all-time sandwich. When we lived in Florida, I would get it at a local Jewish deli. Their rye bread was homemade and A-mazing. Sadly, there are no Jewish delis by us here in Georgia. If I drive an hour into Atlanta, then I can have a fabulous sandwich on rye but I’m not going to do that very often. So I started making it myself. While I was making it, I figured I might as well make it healthy too. So a low-fat coleslaw was in order plus a low-fat Thousand Island dressing. Oh yes, the sandwich has to have both. Now I like it with rye or marble rye. If you really hate rye, go for whole wheat. It will still be tasty. This sandwich is perfect for lunch or dinner. It feels like a meal in itself. This sandwich has soft bread, crunchy slaw, smoky ham and a smear of tangy Thousand Island. What more could you want out of a sandwich?
