Once summer hits, I love to have smoothies for breakfast. They are cool and refreshing plus I get an extra bonus from getting fruit into my diet first thing in the morning. Mango Guanabana smoothie has quickly become my favorite. I don’t like overly sweet foods at breakfast. This smoothie strikes the perfect balance of sweetness and silky texture.
Are you wondering what the heck a guanabana is? I hadn’t the faintest clue the first time I saw it. My favorite Greek yogurt, Fage, has a mango guanabana flavor. It is by far my favorite flavored yogurt ever. I don’t like a lot of flavored yogurt because they are too sweet. This is perfect. I could eat it morning, noon and night. I had to do a search to see what guanabana was. It is also known as soursop and is a large spiny tropical fruit that is slightly tart and is related to a custard apple. I’ve never actually seen the fruit itself but I found some frozen pureed guanabana in the freezer section of my local grocery store.
My big issue with smoothies is the texture. I don’t like to add ice. I want it creamy and thick. To get the texture I like, I use cottage cheese. Funnily enough, I don’t like cottage cheese on its own. I cannot stand to eat it unless it is hidden in something. You can’t taste it in the smoothie. It makes my smoothie feel like a nice, rich milkshake. I get a double bonus from an additional boost of protein.
My little one loves smoothies in the summer too. It just makes me feel like we are getting the day off on the right foot. Some day I am going to get the courage to try a smoothie with kale or spinach. I’m not sure how my blender would handle it though. So if I win the lottery, I am going to buy a Blendtec or a Vitamix. Then I can whip up any type of smoothie I want. In the meantime, I’ll stick to my little blender and my fruit and cottage cheese smoothies.
1/4 fresh mango, peeled and chopped
4 oz. frozen guanabana pulp
1/2 cup 2% fat cottage cheese
3/4 cup water
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- Place all ingredients into a blender and puree until smooth. Makes 1 serving
